Dr. Rhodah Kithuku Visits Kwa Kamari Attack Victims, Offers Support to Bereaved Families

Kitui County Woman Representative aspirant Hon. Dr. Rhodah Kithuku on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, visited Kwa Kamari village in Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Sub-county, where she met families and residents affected by a recent deadly attack that left 7 people dead.

The attack, believed to have been carried out by suspected camel herders, occurred two weeks ago and has heightened fears over insecurity in Kitui’s border areas. The tragic incident has added to a growing list of similar attacks that have continued to disrupt livelihoods and claim innocent lives in the Kitui.

Dr. Kithuku’s visit came just days after the requiem mass and burial of the seven victims, who were laid to rest last Saturday in emotional ceremonies attended by leaders and hundreds of mourners.

During her visit, she conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their loved ones and standing in solidarity with the community during this difficult period.

As part of her support, Dr. Kithuku offered financial assistance to the affected families, to support them in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Addressing residents of Kwa Kamari, Dr. Kithuku called for urgent and decisive action to restore security in the area. She urged the government to intensify patrols and launch a comprehensive disarmament operation targeting armed individuals believed to be hiding in nearby forests. “We need a serious security operation here to ensure that all those hiding in the forests are disarmed. This is the only way we can end these senseless killings,” she said.

She further advocated for the establishment of a Border Patrol Unit (BPU) in the area, similar to the one in Kanyoonyoo, to monitor and control cross-border movements. According to her, such a unit would help curb the infiltration of armed individuals into Kitui County and enhance safety for residents living near the borders.

In addition, Dr. Kithuku called for the deployment of more police officers to Kwa Kamari Police Station, noting that the current presence, including General Service Unit (GSU) officers should be made permanent to guarantee lasting security. She also emphasized the need for the deployment of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) to reinforce ongoing operations. “We are urging the government to ensure that these officers are stationed here permanently. Security should not be reactive, coming only during crises and disappearing afterward. We need a sustained presence, including RDU officers, to fully secure this area,” she stated.

Dr. Kithuku expressed her sympathy to residents of Kwa Kamari and other Kitui border communities, acknowledging the long-standing suffering caused by repeated attacks linked to suspected camel herders.

She reaffirmed her commitment to addressing insecurity if elected as Kitui County Woman Representative in 2027, pledging to champion the concerns of affected communities at the national level. She noted that her background and experience in security matters would enable her to effectively advocate for lasting solutions. “Our people deserve to live in peace and dignity. I will ensure their voices are heard and push for concrete measures to end this menace once and for all,” she added.

Her visit brought a sense of hope to the grieving community, even as residents continue to call for urgent government intervention to prevent further loss of life.
