Tragedy in Kitui: Police Officer Kills Girlfriend and Her Friend in Bar Shooting
A police officer from Kanyonyoo Police Station in Kitui Rural is at the centre of a manhunt after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her friend on Sunday night, August 3, following a domestic altercation that escalated into a tragic double homicide.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the officer who was on duty at the station’s report office abandoned his post and left with an AK-47 rifle. He proceeded to a local bar at Kanyonyoo market, where his girlfriend, identified as Joy Mutisya, was socialising with friends.
Witnesses say the officer arrived in uniform, visibly agitated, and confronted Joy in the presence of other patrons. Revelers quickly sensed the danger posed by the armed officer, sparking panic and confusion inside the bar.

Fearing for her safety, Joy fled the establishment and sought refuge at a nearby house owned by her friend, identified only as Judy. The officer followed her to the house, where he reportedly forced entry and opened fire, fatally shooting both women before fleeing the scene on foot.
Responding officers from Kanyonyoo Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after and confirmed the deaths of both women. Two spent cartridges were recovered at the crime scene. Their bodies were transported to Kitui Level Five Hospital Mortuary, where postmortem examinations are scheduled.
In a startling development, the suspect later contacted his superiors, informing them he had abandoned his firearm a government-issued AK-47 loaded with 26 rounds in a thicket along the Matuu road. Police recovered the weapon but were unable to immediately apprehend the officer, who remains at large.
Authorities have since launched an intensive manhunt in surrounding areas, while forensic teams continue to gather evidence from the scene.
Police are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect.
