Over 7,000 Youths Attend Kitui Diocese’s 10th Annual Faith Walk

The Catholic Diocese of Kitui on Friday, April 17, 2026, successfully held its 10th Annual Diocesan Youth Walk, drawing an overwhelming participation of over 7,000 young people from across the Diocese in a vibrant display of faith, unity, and reflection.

The spiritually enriching event was led by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela, the Coadjutor Bishop of Machakos and Apostolic Administrator of Kitui, and was held under the theme “Rooted in Christ, Living for Christ.” The annual walk has grown into a significant highlight in the diocesan calendar, offering young people a platform for both spiritual nourishment and engagement with pressing social issues.

The annual event, which has grown steadily over the years, brought together youths from different parishes across the diocese in a show of unity and faith. Organizers said the walk is designed not only as a spiritual pilgrimage but also as a platform to engage young people on critical life issues.

The day’s activities began with a Holy Mass presided over by Bishop Mwongela, who later joined the youth in the symbolic pilgrimage. The walk covered over 12 kilometers, stretching from Mulutu to St. John Paul II Institute grounds in Kitui Town, where the event culminated in a grand gathering.

Along the route, participants made several stopovers designed to foster dialogue and reflection. These sessions featured experts and spiritual leaders who addressed a range of contemporary challenges facing the youth today. Key topics included mental health, drug and substance abuse, peer pressure, gambling, unemployment, the influence of social media, relationships, sexuality, and the role of faith in navigating life’s complexities.

Kitui Diocese Youth Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Charles Kimanga, delivered a powerful message cautioning young people against the dangers of seeking shortcuts in life. He particularly warned against the rising trend of gambling among the youth, urging them to remain grounded in strong moral values and faith. “The path to fulfillment is not found in shortcuts,” Fr. Kimanga emphasized. “Stay committed to your values, trust in God, and avoid choices that may lead to self-destruction.” he said, urging the youth to remain disciplined, make informed decisions, and stay grounded in their faith.

Speaking to the media during the event, Bishop Mwongela also expressed concern over the increasing trend of politicians misusing young people to engage in acts of violence and disruptive activities. He strongly condemned the vice and called on the youth to resist manipulation and instead embrace integrity, responsibility, and peaceful coexistence. “The youth are the future of our society and must not allow themselves to be used as tools for chaos. Choose the path of peace, dignity, and purpose,” he urged.

The 10th edition of the Diocesan Youth Walk not only celebrated a decade of spiritual journeying but also reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to guiding young people through faith while equipping them to confront real-world challenges.
