Akamba FM marked this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations in a meaningful and impactful way by launching the “Mwana ni Mwana” Initiative, a community-focused campaign aimed at promoting inclusion and support for Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs), the elderly, and other vulnerable groups in Mutomo town, Kitui South Constituency.

The event was held at the Mutomo Chief’s Office Grounds and drew a large turnout of residents, local leaders, and stakeholders, in a colourful celebration that temporarily brought Mutomo town to a standstill. Celebrations were marked by emotional scenes as beneficiaries received wheelchairs, walking aids, and crutches, significantly improving their mobility and quality of life.

In addition to assistive devices and in the spirit of the festive season, Akamba FM distributed Christmas food hampers to PLWDs, senior citizens, and vulnerable families as part of the station’s end-year community outreach, ensuring beneficiaries could celebrate the end of the year with joy and dignity.

Beneficiaries were identified through listener-led on-air appeals across Kitui South, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Akamba FM and its leadership. Many described the initiative as life-changing and commended the station for going beyond broadcasting to directly impact lives within the community.

The “Mwana ni Mwana” Campaign was spearheaded by Akamba FM Head of Marketing, Ms. Angelica Ndinda, alongside the Akamba FM Morning Show team led by Alphonce Mutinda Kanyili, popularly known on air as Isunzuma Mweene or Ivuva Letiu, together with his co-host Mukamba Mjanja. The team conducted live broadcasts from the venue, allowing listeners across Ukambani and beyond to follow the celebrations in real time and actively participate.

The event was graced by government officials led by Mutomo Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Peter Mutu, who praised Akamba FM for the noble initiative. He described the campaign as a shining example of responsible, community-centered media and encouraged the station to sustain the program, noting that it complements government efforts toward social protection and inclusion.

Mutomo/Kibwea Ward MCA Hon. David Masaku also applauded the station for using its platform to drive positive social change. Saying that the initiative strengthens Akamba FM’s relationship with its audience by addressing real challenges facing the community.

As Akamba FM continues to dominate the airwaves in Ukambani region and beyond, the launch of the “Mwana ni Mwana” Initiative underscored the role of media in advancing inclusive development and supporting vulnerable groups at the grassroots level, spreading hope, dignity, and joy especially during this festive season.
