New Dawn for Pastoralist Communities as PS Jonathan Mueke Commissions 20-Million-Litre Nomotio Water Pan in Samburu County
A historic milestone was achieved today for pastoralist families in Samburu County as Principal Secretary for State Department Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke, together with H.E. Gabriel Lenengwesi, Deputy Governor of Samburu County, officially commissioned the 20-million-litre Nomotio Water Pan at the Nomotio Livestock Improvement Centre (NLIC).
The life-changing project, funded under the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP), is designed to secure a reliable water source for livestock during the harshest drought seasons while also nourishing fodder for animal feed. Leaders hailed the project as a critical step in building resilience, boosting productivity, and uplifting the livelihoods of pastoralist households.

Speaking during the launch, PS Jonathan Mueke emphasized that Kenya’s recent signing of the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) has unlocked a ready export market in several Arab States for livestock and livestock products. To fully harness these opportunities, he urged farmers to: Adopt high-yielding, profitable breeds provided by KeLCoP.
Vaccinate herds against diseases such as Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) to ensure strong and healthy animals as well as Embrace digital innovations like ANITRAC, the Animal Identification and Traceability System, which guarantees every livestock product is traceable from farm to market, meeting global export standards.

The PS also highlighted the government’s restocking initiative for animal feeds as part of broader drought-mitigation efforts, encouraging farmers to maintain lean, quality herds that stand out in both domestic and international markets.
“Together, we are not just providing water we are empowering pastoralist families, opening new markets, and transforming lives in Samburu and across Kenya,” said PS Mueke.

KeLCoP continues to play a transformative role in the livestock sector by raising incomes for smallholder farmers, strengthening food and nutrition security, and empowering women and youth in pastoralist communities all while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

The commissioning was graced by a strong team of leaders, including Dr. Allan Azegele (Directorate of Veterinary Services), Dr. Moses Kembe (KeLCoP), Director Bishar Elmi (DLP), Prof. Abdi Guliye (Presidential Livestock Development Advisor), the Samburu County Commissioner, senior county officials, and representatives from the State Department for Livestock Development.
With the Nomotio Water Pan now complete, Samburu’s pastoralist families can look forward to a future where access to water, improved breeds, and international markets bring lasting prosperity to their communities.
