The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has dismissed its Vice Chairperson, Ms. Wambui Nyutu, citing persistent involvement in partisan political activities, a direct violation of her oath of office and the legal framework guiding the Commission’s operations.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, following a Special Commission Meeting held today on July 22, 2025. In an official statement, the Commission declared that Ms. Nyutu’s continued conduct had become “untenable” and was no longer compatible with the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of her role.

“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Ms. Nyutu has been under internal scrutiny since early 2025 over a string of public engagements and remarks that the Commission considered politically charged. The NCIC convened three previous Special Meetings; on January 3, January 23, and February 6 to address the concerns.

Though Nyutu initially denied the allegations, she later issued an apology and pledged to refrain from any political involvement. However, the Commission noted that her recommitment to neutrality was short-lived.

“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” said Rev. Kobia.

The NCIC emphasized that Nyutu’s actions directly violated the principle of impartiality expected of all Commissioners. Her continued political involvement was described as a breach of both the National Cohesion and Integration Act and the ethical standards required of public officers.

“These actions constitute continued engagement in partisan politics, in contravention of her commitment to the Commission and in breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all Commissioners,” added Rev. Kobia.

Following her dismissal from the Vice Chair role, the NCIC has now initiated the formal process to remove Ms. Nyutu entirely from her position as Commissioner. This move is being executed in accordance with Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) and other relevant constitutional provisions.

The Commission confirmed it would formally notify the appointing authority of its decision and the next steps.

In a swift leadership transition, the Commission unanimously elected Dr. Dorcas Kedogo as the new Vice Chairperson, with the appointment taking immediate effect.

The NCIC also took the opportunity to distance itself from any previous political statements or engagements by Nyutu, stating that they were made in her personal capacity and do not represent the Commission’s official stance.

Reaffirming its mandate, the NCIC reiterated its dedication to fostering national unity through impartiality and professionalism.“Commissioners are bound by the oath of office to remain independent and non-partisan,” Rev. Kobia emphasized.
