Kitui County Assembly Speaker Hon. Kevin Kinengo Katisya has officially declared his intention to contest the Kitui senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

The Speaker made the declaration on Sunday, December 14, 2025, during a thanksgiving ceremony held at Musavani Primary School in Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Constituency. The event was organized to support the construction of an ultra-modern church for the Independent Presbyterian Church (IPC) Musavani, his home church.

Addressing clergy, leaders and residents, Speaker Katisya affirmed his readiness to traverse the entire county in search of support, noting that his decision followed extensive consultations with the people of Kitui. “I have stepped in every corner of this great county of Kitui, from Athi to Zombe, from Kanyangi to Migwani, from Nuu to Mutomo, from Muumoni and Tharaka to Kwa Vonza, and from Miambani back home here in Musavani, listening to the people on where they want me to serve,” he said.

According to Speaker Katisya, residents and fellow Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) advised him to seek a position that serves the entire county. Having served all wards in his role as Speaker, he concluded that the senatorial seat best aligns with his experience and the people’s expectations. “After wide consultations, the people of Kitui and my fellow MCAs told me clearly that since I serve the whole county as Speaker, I should seek a seat that represents the entire county. I therefore resolved, wholeheartedly, to vie for the position of Senator,” he stated.

He further revealed that before making the final decision, he sought blessings from his family, emphasizing the importance of family support in leadership. “As you all know, family comes first. I consulted my family, especially my loving wife, Lavine Kinengo, whose unwavering support, love, and encouragement continue to inspire me. With the blessings of my family, the church, the community, my colleagues, and the people of Kitui, I have resolved to answer the call to serve,” he said.

Speaker Katisya will be seeking to become the third Senator of Kitui County, after Hon. David Musila who served as the first Kitui senator from 2013–2017 and the current Senator, Hon. Enoch Kiio Wambua, who is serving his second term and has already declared his intention to vie for the gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Making his announcement before thousands of residents, over 30 MCAs, visiting county assembly speakers, and other leaders, Speaker Katisya confidently affirmed his ambition. “On this 14th day of December 2025, standing before the church, my family, the people of Musavani, my fellow MCAs, and the people of Kitui and Kenya at large, I Kevin Kinengo Katisya want to declare that in the 2027 General Election, I will vie for the Kitui senatorial seat,” he announced.

On his political party affiliation, Katisya declined to disclose which party he will use in 2027. Amid speculation that he may not contest on a Wiper Patriotic Front ticket following a reported fallout with party leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, he assured supporters that he would announce his party choice at the appropriate time.

He downplayed the importance of party labels, likening political parties to vehicles used to reach a destination. “The party one uses does not really matter. A party is like a car it simply helps you reach your destination. When the time comes, I will inform the people of Kitui which party I will use,” he said.

Hon. Kinengo Katisya, currently the youngest Speaker among the 47 county assembly speakers in Kenya, has risen through the ranks against the odds to become one of the country’s most prominent legislative leader and lawyer. He now sets his sights on representing Kitui County in the Senate.

The  event was attended by several leaders, including Kwale County Assembly Speaker and Chairperson of the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), Hon. Seth Mwatela Kamanza, and Bomet County Assembly Speaker Hon. Cosmas Kipngetich Korir. Also present were Kitui County Executive Committee Members Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele (Agriculture and Livestock) and Peter Nkuda (Water and Irrigation), who represented Governor Dr. Julius Malombe.

Also more than 30 Kitui MCAs attended the event, led by Deputy Speaker Hon. Christopher Nzilu, Majority Leader Hon. Harrison Maluki, alongside thousands of residents from Musavani and across Kitui County.
