Kitui KNUT Secretary General Simon Nding’o Accuses TSC of Corruption and Unfairness in Teacher Promotions
Kitui County Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Mr. Simon Mutunga Nding’o, has launched a scathing attack on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), accusing it of corruption and discrimination in the promotion of teachers.
Speaking during a burial function at Matinyani Ward in Kitui West Constituency, Mr. Nding’o alleged that the commission has been sidelining teachers from Kitui in promotions, favouring educators from other regions instead. He noted that despite Kitui producing highly qualified teachers, only a handful are considered for elevation.
“The TSC is not fair to Kitui when it comes to promotions. They have allocated very few slots to our teachers, while more than 200 teachers from outside Kitui have been transferred here to serve as deputy heads in both primary and secondary schools,” he said.
He, however, commended the commission for its management of new recruitment, pointing out that Kitui County was allocated 925 intern teacher positions in the recent nationwide recruitment of 24,000 teachers, with the slots fairly distributed across all sub-counties a move he termed commendable. But he stressed that promotions remain a deeply flawed and compromised process.
“When it comes to employment, we are satisfied with what TSC has done. But in the issue of promotions, corruption is beyond reasonable. Kitui teachers are left out despite their qualifications,” he lamented.
Mr. Nding’o further warned that if the issue is not addressed, teachers in Kitui will have no choice but to take to the streets in mass protests to demand justice. “We have qualified and learned teachers here in Kitui. Why are they not being promoted? If TSC fails to address this, we will mobilize teachers and protest until our voices are heard,” he declared.
The remarks by the KNUT County boss add to growing concerns from education stakeholders who have long accused TSC of favouritism and lack of transparency in the promotions process.
