Ikanga/Kyatune Ward MCA Hon. Cyrus Musyoka, popularly known as Sonko, has intensified his crackdown on illegal sand harvesting and the growing sand business within the ward.

The outspoken MCA has recently raised alarm over what he describes as rampant and unlawful extraction of sand from local rivers and especially River Nzeeu, warning that the practice is not only illegal but also poses a serious threat to the environmental destruction.

Last week, Hon. Sonko publicly declared that he was fully aware of the ongoing illegal sand harvesting and commercial sale of sand within Ikanga/Kyatune Ward. He vowed to take decisive and firm action to bring the vice to an end.

In a strongly worded message, the MCA warned those involved in the illegal trade to immediately stop the activity or face tough consequences. “We are soon stopping illegal sand business in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward. I’m ready to fight to my last breath to actualize this. So help me God,” he stated.

His remarks appear to signal a renewed and determined campaign aimed at protecting local rivers and ensuring that natural resources within the ward are used responsibly.

The fight took a dramatic turn on Saturday, March 14, 2026, when the MCA, accompanied by a group of local youths, intercepted a tractor ferrying sand from Nzeeu River at the Ithumula drift.

According to Hon. Sonko, the illegal sand trade has been operating through a well-organized network where individuals extract sand from rivers and store it at strategic locations before transporting it for commercial sale.

He alleged that sand cartels have been piling up large heaps of sand at Ikanga Market under the pretense that it is meant for home construction. However, the sand is later collected by lorries during late-night hours and transported for commercial use.

Speaking exclusively to Ukambani News Hub, the MCA reaffirmed his commitment to ending the illegal trade, emphasizing that the fight is aimed at protecting the environment and ensuring law and order within the ward. “Slowly but surely, we shall stop the menace of illegal sand harvesting in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward,” he said.

Illegal sand harvesting has become a growing concern in many parts of Kitui County, with leaders and environmental advocates warning that uncontrolled extraction can lead to river degradation, environmental damage, and long-term ecological consequences.

Hon. Sonko’s latest actions signal a firm stand against the vice, as residents now wait to see whether the intensified crackdown will finally bring an end to the controversial sand business in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward.
