Why Wiper Party is Finally Poised to Secure the Kitui South MP Seat in 2027 Elections
The race for the Kitui South Constituency parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 General Election is already taking shape, with the Wiper Patriotic Front, appearing determined to finally capture the constituency’s MP seat after years of unsuccessful attempts.
Since the introduction of devolution in 2013, the party has repeatedly come close to winning the Kitui South MP seat but has consistently fallen short. However, it’s now believed the tides may finally be turning in Wiper’s favour with the entry of Hon. Gladys Mami Kivoto, CPA into the race as a strong contender in the upcoming 2027 polls.
Wiper first made a serious attempt to clinch the parliamentary seat during the 2013 General Election when Hon. Michael Kivoto flew the party’s flag against the incumbent MP Dr. Rachael Nyamai, who vied on a Narc Party ticket. Despite a spirited campaign by the Wiper candidate, the party narrowly lost after Michael Kivoto garnered 13,187 votes.
The party again failed to secure the seat in the 2017 General Election when its candidate Hon. Kennedy Moki lost to Dr. Rachael Nyamai. Moki later challenged the results in court, but the court upheld Nyamai’s victory. In the 2022 general elections, Wiper once more suffered defeat after its candidate Daniel Mutua, popularly known as “Magereza,” failed to unseat the incumbent.

However, the political mood in the constituency now appears significantly different ahead of the next election cycle.
According to several opinion polls and political trends within in the constituency, have placed Hon. Gladys Mami Kivoto as the most popular candidate in the Kitui South MP race. Her growing influence and mobilization across the constituency are seen as giving the Wiper Patriotic Front its strongest chance ever of winning the parliamentary seat in the constituency.
Her popularity received a major boost following her endorsement by Wiper party leader H.E Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the opposition leaders’ “Meet the People Tour” in Kitui South last month.
The endorsement by the two influential leaders strengthened her position and further energized Wiper supporters across the constituency.
Beyond the endorsements, Hon. Mami Kivoto is said to have built a strong grassroots network across all 6 wards of Kitui South. Reports from the ground indicate that youths, women, men, and elderly residents have increasingly expressed support for her candidature, with many calling for a change in leadership in the constituency.
At the same time, the incumbent MP is reportedly facing growing criticism from sections of residents over alleged poor leadership and declining public trust. Among the issues raised by constituents include claims of unfair bursary distribution, lack of visible development projects, alleged mismanagement of NG-CDF funds, corruption allegations, and concerns over accountability.
The incumbent also faced political backlash after supporting the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which sparked nationwide protests led largely by Gen Z youths.
With political momentum seemingly shifting, many political analysts now believe the Wiper Patriotic Front could finally make history by winning the Kitui South parliamentary seat for the first time since the advent of devolution.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, all eyes will remain on Kitui South to see whether Hon. Gladys Mami Kivoto can translate her growing popularity into victory and deliver the long-awaited parliamentary seat to the Wiper Patriotic Front.
