Makueni Man Seeks Help to Clear Ksh. 3.9 Million Hospital Bill for Wife’s Body to be Released

Alex  Ndivo Mutua from Matulani Village in Kinyambu Location, Thange Ward of Kibwezi Sub-County, Makueni County, is pleading with leaders and well-wishers for urgent financial assistance to help him settle a hospital bill amounting to Ksh. 3.9 million. The hospital has withheld the body of his late wife, Kanini Mwikali, following her death while undergoing treatment at Westlands Specialist Hospital in Nairobi.

According to the distressed husband, Alex Ndivo Mutua, his wife was first taken to AMREF Kibwezi Sub-County Hospital on May 10, 2025, after experiencing labour pains. She underwent a Cesarean section and successfully gave birth to a baby boy. However, just four hours after the operation, Kanini developed severe breathing complications.

The hospital referred her to Makindu Level IV Hospital, but on arrival, the medical staff there indicated they were not equipped to handle her condition. A further referral was made to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Unfortunately, a call to KNH revealed that there were no available ICU beds at the time.

Faced with no other options and a worsening situation, the family rushed Kanini to Westlands Specialist Hospital in Nairobi, where she was admitted to the ICU on May 11, 2025. She remained hospitalized for one month, fighting for her life until June 10, 2025, when she sadly passed away.

Since her passing, the hospital has withheld her body, citing an outstanding bill of Ksh. 3.9 million. Alex organized a fundraiser (Harambee) and sold a piece of land to raise Ksh. 440,000, which was paid to the hospital. Despite this, he was informed that the hospital requires the full amount to release the body. The outstanding balance now stands at Ksh. 3.4 million, and the bill continues to grow with each passing day.

The one-month-old baby boy is now being cared for by Alex’s 75-year-old mother, as the family struggles to come to terms with the tragic loss and mounting debt. “My wife has been lying in the morgue for almost two months now. I’ve tried everything I can, but I am overwhelmed. I’m humbly appealing to anyone who can help to come to our aid so that I can give my wife a decent sendoff,” says a heartbroken Alex.

He is now appealing to local leaders, national figures, churches, and the wider Kenyan community to help him raise the remaining amount so that he can finally bury his beloved wife.
