How CO Gladys Kivoto’s Intervention Opened Floodgates of Support for Displaced Thangilani Residents in Musenge Mutha Ward
When residents of Thangilani village in Musenge location, Mutha Ward, Kitui South constituency, were brutally attacked by suspected camel herders few weeks ago, their lives were thrown into chaos. Homes and food granaries were torched, while camels were let to destroy their farms, pushing the community to the brink of food insecurity.
In the aftermath of the attack, the first leader to rush to their aid was Agriculture and Fisheries Chief Officer Gladys Mami Kivoto. She visited the displaced families and immediately provided relief foodstuffs, mattresses, polythene sheets to set up temporary shelters, and clothing for mothers and children who had been left with nothing. Many of the victims had been forced to spend nights in the cold, under trees, and in the open.

CO Gladys Kivoto has consistently stood with the people of Kitui South whether in times of disaster, in moments of grief, or in seasons of joy, and her quick intervention in Thangilani once again triggered wider support. Acting through her office, she lobbied for urgent assistance, which saw the County Government of Kitui step in on Thursday, August 28.

The county distributed essential food supplies including 64 bags of maize, 35 bags of rice, 30 cans of cooking oil, and 10 bags of beans to 39 displaced families. They also delivered non-food items such as blankets, soap, 20-litre water jerricans, buckets, and dignity kits for women and girls. To ease the water crisis, two 10,000-litre water tanks were installed and filled by county water bowsers.

To support the continuity of learning for displaced children, the county also provided exercise books, pens, and pencils, ensuring they can continue with their education despite the crisis.
The distribution was led by Finance CECM Peter Mwikya Kilonzo, CO Gladys Kivoto, CO Stephen Salee (Decentralised Units), and CO Francisca Kyuii (Disaster Management).

The relief efforts are gaining momentum, with former Kitui Governor Hon. Charity Ngilu also expected to visit Mutha Ward today to stand with the affected families and extend more support.
Crucially, all this began after CO Gladys Kivoto raised the alarm on the plight of Thangilani residents, ensuring that their suffering did not go unnoticed.
But while CO Kivoto and other leaders have shown up, the area MP has remained conspicuously absent neither visiting the victims nor sending representatives to stand with them. Her silence in the face of such tragedy has only revealed where true concern for the people of Kitui South lies.
