Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday, September 9, inspected the ongoing construction of the Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui Central, which is set to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

The 10,000-seater stadium, a signature project valued at Ksh. 700 million, is already 80% complete. Once finalized, the facility will meet international standards and is expected to serve Kitui residents for generations to come, providing a venue for major sports tournaments, cultural events, and other community activities.

During his visit, Prof. Kindiki urged the contractor to ensure timely completion of the project without compromising on quality. He emphasized that the facility’s success would not only shape this year’s national celebrations but also leave a lasting legacy for the county.

In addition to the stadium, the Deputy President also toured the Ithookwe Airstrip, which is undergoing rehabilitation at a cost of Ksh. 150 million. The airstrip, which had previously fallen into disrepair, is being upgraded to support the increased traffic expected during and after the Mashujaa Day festivities.

As the host town, Kitui is set to benefit from a significant infrastructure uplift, including improved roads, electricity connections, and water supply. These upgrades are expected to boost the town’s profile, enhance economic opportunities, and strengthen its capacity to host future national and regional events.

The Ithookwe Stadium and Airstrip projects are part of broader Kenya Kwanza government efforts to invest in infrastructure that promotes development, unity, and national pride as Kenya prepares to celebrate its heroes on Mashujaa Day.
