On Thursday morning, September 11, 2025, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya, together with Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, toured the ongoing construction works at the Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County. The facility has been earmarked to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in October 20th.

During the inspection, CS Mvurya expressed satisfaction with the pace of the project, noting that the stadium is currently 80% complete. He emphasized that the technical team is working round the clock to deliver the priority sections before the set deadline.

“I’m impressed with the progress of the stadium. It is now 80% complete. We are planning to officially take over the facility from the contractors by October 6th, which will allow the National Celebrations Committee to finalize preparations ahead of Mashujaa Day,” said CS Mvurya.

Governor Malombe, in his remarks, thanked President William Ruto for supporting key projects in Kitui, including the Ithookwe Stadium, the county airstrip, and the Kanyonyoo feedlot project.

“On behalf of the people of Kitui, I sincerely thank President William Ruto for the development projects being implemented in our county. Apart from the Ithookwe Stadium, we also appreciate the progress on the airstrip and the feedlot at Kanyonyoo,” said Governor Malombe.

The governor also revealed that his county executive has formally adopted “Ithookwe Stadium Kitui” as the official name of the facility. The resolution has already been forwarded to the relevant technical committee for approval.

Beyond hosting this year’s national celebrations, the stadium is expected to become a vital hub for sports and creative talent development, offering opportunities for young people across Kitui County and the wider region.

The CS was accompanied by Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Sports Kenya Acting Director General Gabriel Komora, Kitui Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, several County Executive Committee Members, the County Security Team, the National Steering Committee for National Celebrations, and senior government officials.
