CECM Peter Nkuda, Super CO Gladys Kivoto and KITWASCO MD. June Kavyati Inspect Kangu Kangu Water Project Ahead of Launch

Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for water and irrigation Peter Nkuda, Agriculture and Fisheries Super CO Gladys Mami Kivoto and KITWASCO Managing Director Mrs. June Kavyati, on Wednesday inspected the flagship Kangu Kangu Water Project in Kitui South, signaling its readiness for commissioning next week.
The Ksh. 839.7 million project will be launched on Friday, September 19, 2025. Initially set for commissioning on June 20, the launch faced setbacks due to vandalism of installations and additional final testing. The August rescheduling was also postponed, pushing the date to September.
CECM Nkunda hailed the project as a historic milestone for the county. “For decades, our people have struggled to access clean and reliable water. Today we can proudly say that Kitui is delivering on its promise. This project will transform lives in ways that go beyond water, it will support agriculture, and restore dignity to households,” he said.

Super CO Gladys Kivoto emphasized the agricultural benefits of the initiative. “ this project will support agriculture with reliable water, our farmers will finally have the chance to irrigate their crops consistently and diversify production. This is a direct boost to food security and livelihoods in Kitui South and Kitui county at large,” she noted.

KITWASCO MD Mrs. Kavyati reassured residents of sustainable management and protection of the new infrastructure.
Once commissioned, the Kangu Kangu Water Project is expected to be a game-changer for people in Kitui South and some parts of Kitui Rural Sub-Counties. It will deliver clean, reliable, and safe water to over 25,000 households, reaching an estimated 100,000 residents across six (6) wards in Kitui South constituency and parts of Kitui Rural Sub-County. The benefiting wards include Mutomo, Kanziku, Mutha, Ikutha, Athi, and Kanyangi.
The project is being implemented by the county government of Kitui in partnership with World Vision, marking a milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition. Leaders noted that with water scarcity being a persistent challenge, the initiative will bring significant relief to households while supporting health and livelihoods.

The Kangu Kangu Water Project is part of governor Malombe’s broader agenda to expand water access and improve livelihoods under the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2023–2027 and The Kitui Promise, which prioritizes investments in key infrastructure and basic services.
