Ikanga Level 4 Hospital Set for Major Facelift as Asbestos Roofing Removal Begins

Residents of Ikanga/Kyatune Ward are set to benefit from safer and improved healthcare services after the long-awaited removal of hazardous asbestos roofing sheets and re-roofing works at Ikanga Level 4 Hospital officially commenced following the official handover of the site to the contractor.

The exercise, which took place on Friday, May 29, 2026, was spearheaded by the office of Ikanga/Kyatune Ward MCA Hon. Cyrus Musyoka, popularly known as Sonko, marking yet another milestone in the ward’s ongoing healthcare improvement agenda.

The project, which Hon. Sonko has relentlessly pushed for since his election in 2022, seeks to eliminate the dangerous asbestos iron sheets that have posed serious health risks to patients, healthcare workers, and residents for years. Long-term exposure to asbestos has widely been linked to severe health complications, including lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

Speaking during the site handover, Hon. Cyrus Musyoka’s office team reaffirmed his commitment to transforming and facelifting healthcare facilities across Ikanga/Kyatune Ward, noting that quality healthcare infrastructure remains a key priority of his leadership.

The site handover was led by Hon. Cyrus Sonko’s office PA Senior Kilunda.

While speaking exclusively to Ukambani News Hub MCA Sonko applauded the County Government of Kitui under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe for prioritizing healthcare development across the county and especially in Ikanga/Kyatune ward through infrastructural upgrades and improved medical services. “This project is about protecting the lives of our people. Asbestos has been linked to serious health complications such as lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. We are committed to ensuring our residents access healthcare services in a safe and dignified environment,” said Hon. Sonko.

The County Ministry of health leadership, including Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Ruth Koki, Chief Officer for Medical Services Dr. Benson Musyoka, Chief Officer for Drugs Aggrey Kamba, and Chief Officer for Public Health and Sanitation Lynn Kitwan, have worked round the clock in supporting the project.

CO Lynn Kitwan had earlier promised to facilitate the asbestos removal project during the commissioning of Kathungu Dispensary a month ago after a request was made by the area MCA, Hon. Cyrus Musyoka Sonko.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, terming it a major step toward improving healthcare standards in the ward. The re-roofing works are expected to not only enhance safety but also restore the hospital’s appearance and create a more conducive environment for healthcare delivery.
