Nicholas Mulila Leads Handover of Ksh. 14.4 Million Medical Equipment at Kauwi Sub-County Hospital Through M-PESA Foundation
Kauwi Sub-County Hospital has received a major boost in maternal and general healthcare following the handover of newly renovated facilities and modern medical equipment valued at Ksh. 14.4 million. The initiative, spearheaded by Hon. Nicholas Mulila, Chief Corporate Security Officer at Safaricom PLC, was officially launched today through the support of the M-PESA Foundation.

The upgraded facility now boasts of a fully equipped theatre with theatre beds, theatre lighting, and advanced laboratory equipment including an anesthesia machine and an electrolyte analyzer. The physiotherapy department has also been enhanced with equipment such as a heavy-duty massager and a red-light massager, among others.

This investment underscores Hon. Mulila’s continued dedication to improving healthcare services across Kitui County, particularly for vulnerable mothers and children. The enhanced capacity at Kauwi Sub-County Hospital is expected to significantly reduce referrals to Kitui County Referral Hospital, enabling residents of Kitui West to access comprehensive healthcare closer to home. Services such as maternity care, outpatient and inpatient treatment, laboratory diagnostics, and emergency response will now be delivered more efficiently within the community.

The Kauwi equipping project is part of a broader series of healthcare investments championed by Hon. Nicholas Mulila in Kitui County. Other facilities, including Mutomo Mission Hospital, and Yatta Level III Hospital have each benefited from Ksh. 15 million in support from the M-PESA Foundation. These initiatives focus on enhancing medical infrastructure, improving maternity services, and supporting healthcare workers.

Dr. Winfred Muange, Medical Superintendent Officer at Kauwi Sub-County Hospital, expressed heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Mulila and the M-PESA Foundation. “This is a game-changer for our facility. With the new equipment and renovations, we are now better positioned to care for expectant mothers and other patients without referring them to distant hospitals. We sincerely thank Hon. Mulila for championing this noble cause.”

Dr. Winfred also appealed to the M-PESA Foundation to consider supporting the construction of a new outpatient block at the hospital to further improve service delivery.
In his remarks, Hon. Mulila thanked the Kitui County Government for its partnership and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for similar transformative projects in both healthcare and education across the county. He also encouraged residents to continue using Safaricom PLC services, noting that customer loyalty strengthens the company’s ability to support community initiatives through the M-PESA Foundation.

The M-PESA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Safaricom PLC, continues to play a pivotal role in advancing impactful community programs across Kenya, with a strong focus on health, education, and economic empowerment.
