Kitui County super Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Gladys Mami Kivoto, has continued her annual tradition of supporting the elderly by distributing sikukuu goodies to senior citizens across Kitui South Constituency.

The initiative, now in its 7th consecutive year, is fully funded by CO Gladys Kivoto and her family and targets elderly residents in all 6 wards of the Kitui south constituency: Mutomo/Kibwea, Mutha, Ikanga/Kyatune, Athi, Kanziko, and Ikutha. According to CO Kivoto, the programme is a personal commitment driven by the desire to give back to the elderly who once nurtured and cared for the community.

The distribution exercise kicked off on Friday, December 26, with visits to Kwa Mbae and Mwala in Mutomo/Kibwea Ward, where elderly residents received food and household essentials, including rice, ndengu (green grams), cooking oil, bread, sodas, and lessos. Later that day, she visited Kiimani in Mutha Ward, where she continued spreading festive cheer and companionship among the elderly.

Speaking during the visits, CO Kivoto said spending time with the elderly during the festive season was important. “It is very encouraging to see our elderly men and women happy. Spending time with them, listening to them, and interacting with them is truly fulfilling.” she said.

On Saturday, December 27, during the second day of the exercise, CO Kivoto and her family continued the initiative in Mutha Ward, starting at Kivyuni in Mathima before moving to Katene and Kalambani, where more elderly residents received the same essential items during this festive season.

Throughout the exercise, CO Kivoto emphasized the importance of caring for the elderly, urging community members to love, respect, and support them as they age.

After completing the sikukuu distribution in Mutha Ward, CO Kivoto visited Ikandani Village to condole with the family of Mutia following the death of their son, Isaac Mutia, who died in a tragic road accident that also claimed the life of the driver. She expressed her condolences and deep sympathy, describing the loss as heartbreaking. “It is deeply painful to see a family lose a young soul in such a tragic way,” she said.

CO Kivoto also used the moment to urge motorists to observe traffic rules and exercise caution on the roads to help reduce the rising number of road accidents and protect lives.
