NLP Party Leader Dr. Kyalo Muli Demands Audit of Nairobi Drainage Systems After Deadly Floods

The National Liberal Party (NLP) through it’s party leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli has called for an urgent audit of drainage and flood management systems in Nairobi following devastating floods caused by heavy rains that left several people dead and displaced hundreds of families across the Kenya’s capital city.
In a press statement released on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the party’s leader Dr. Kyalo Muli said it was unacceptable that country’s capital city continues to face severe disruption whenever heavy rains occur. “The scenes witnessed across Nairobi, submerged roads, stranded families, destroyed homes, and lives cut short are a painful reminder of a crisis that this city has endured repeatedly over the years,” Muli said.

According to preliminary reports, the floods have claimed more than 20 lives while displacing hundreds of residents in several estates across the city. The floods also damaged homes, businesses, vehicles and critical infrastructure.

Dr. Kyalo Muli noted that the disaster had once again exposed major weaknesses in Nairobi’s drainage infrastructure and disaster preparedness systems. “It is unacceptable that a modern capital city continues to grind to a halt whenever heavy rains fall. Nairobi residents deserve a city that can withstand predictable weather events without descending into chaos and tragedy,” he said.

The NLP leader also expressed condolences to families who lost their loved ones and sympathized with residents whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed. “It is with a heavy heart that we express our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. Our sympathies also go to the thousands of residents whose homes, businesses and livelihoods have been swept away by the raging waters,” he said.

At the same time, Dr. Kyalo Muli called on both the national government and the Nairobi City County Government to take responsibility for recurring failures in urban planning and disaster management. “While we mourn with the affected families, we must also speak the truth: this disaster did not occur in a vacuum,” he said. “For years, Kenyans have been promised lasting solutions to the perennial flooding that affects Nairobi every rainy season.”

Muli noted that past flooding disasters had prompted government commitments to improve drainage systems, clear blocked waterways and protect riparian land from encroachment, but said those promises remain largely unfulfilled.

He also called for immediate emergency assistance to support families affected by the floods, including shelter, food and medical services. “The government must move quickly to provide emergency shelter, food supplies and medical support for families who have lost everything,” he said.

Muli further emphasized the need for long-term solutions, including investment in modern drainage infrastructure and strict enforcement of environmental and riparian protection laws. “The lives of Nairobi residents cannot continue to be treated as collateral damage of poor planning and broken promises,” he said.
He warned that without structural reforms and proper accountability, Nairobi risks facing similar tragedies every rainy season.
