The National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) office in Kitui South Constituency is once again under intense public scrutiny following emerging claims of discrepancies in the allocation of bursaries for the 2025/26 Financial Year.

The bursary issuance event was held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the Mutomo Huduma Centre and was presided over by Kitui South Member of Parliament Hon. Rachael Kaki Nyamai.

Speaking during the exercise, the MP announced that over 13,000 beneficiaries drawn from senior secondary schools, colleges, and universities within the constituency had benefited from the fund. She indicated that a total allocation of Ksh. 47 million had been allocated, translating to approximately Ksh. 3,600 per student assuming every beneficiary received equal amount.

However, exclusive information obtained by Ukambani News Hub from verified sources paints a different picture. According to document seen by this publication, each student reportedly received only Ksh. 3,000, Ksh. 600 less than the amount expected from the total figure communicated publicly.

The reported discrepancy has raised concerns among parents and residents, with some alleging possible mismanagement, siphoning of funds, as well as questioning the transparency and accountability of the constituency’s NG-CDF office.

Several parents who spoke to Ukambani News Hub reporter said they had expected higher allocations to help offset rising school fees.

The controversy has also drawn comparisons with neighbouring constituencies. In Kitui Central Constituency, for instance, beneficiaries are said to receive bursaries of at least Ksh. 5,000 per student. In contrast, students in Kitui South reportedly receive allocations ranging between Ksh. 2,000 and Ksh. 3,000, raising questions about the criteria used in determining the amounts and whether equitable distribution standards are being upheld.

Efforts to obtain official documentation from the Kitui South NG-CDF board, including the exact total number of beneficiaries and the breakdown of disbursements, were unsuccessful. Officers at the NG-CDF office were hesitant to release the requested information.

Angry parents and residents who spoke to our reporter expressed disappointment, arguing that the bursary amounts issued fall far below expectations at a time when school fees and the cost of higher education continue to rise. “We had hoped the bursary would significantly ease the burden of school fees, but what was given is too little to make any meaningful difference,” lamented one parent in Mutomo.

Residents are now calling for full disclosure of the bursary allocation records and have urged investigative agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Auditor-General, to conduct an independent audit of the funds.

As pressure mounts, all eyes remain on the Kitui South NG-CDF office to provide clarity and accountability regarding the bursary allocations, a matter that directly affects thousands of learners and struggling families across the constituency.
