Embakasi East Member of Parliament Hon. Babu Owino has raised concerns about an alleged plot to harm him ahead of the burial of former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2025.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms and seen by Ukambani News Hub, Babu Owino claimed that certain individuals whom he says he knows are planning to attack him. “There are plans to attack me on or before the day of Baba’s burial. I am aware of the culprits behind the scheme,” he wrote.
Despite his concerns, the legislator appealed for peace during this sensitive time, calling for Raila Odinga to be honoured with dignity and respect. “It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send-off that he deserves, devoid of unwarranted violence,” he added.

Following the announcement of Raila Odinga’s death on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, numerous leaders both elected and non-elected from across the political divide visited his Karen residence to offer condolences. Among those who paid their respects were President Dr. William Ruto, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretaries, and senior ODM party officials. They were received by the Odinga family, led by Mama Ida Odinga.

Thousands of supporters also gathered outside the Karen home, mourning the late leader. During the visit, chants of “Babu! Babu!” echoed from the crowd a development that sparked controversy within sections of the ODM party.

Some interpreted the chants as a strategic move by Babu Owino to position himself as Raila’s political successor. However, the Embakasi East MP strongly denied orchestrating the chants and distanced himself from any attempts to politicize the moment. “After I visited Raila’s Karen home, people started chanting my name after I left. A lot is being said. Honestly, before man and God, I would be the last person to disrespect Baba. I can’t destroy Raila’s legacy,” Babu stated during his condolence message to the Odinga family.

Reports circulating within political circles suggest that the alleged plot involves a senior government official holding the powerful rank of a Principal Secretary in a strategically influential ministry, who is said to have orchestrated a clandestine plan to deploy organized goons and provocateurs to disrupt the MP during key funeral moments, including the public viewing at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday and the final burial at Opoda Farm in Bondo on Sunday.
According to insiders, the motive is believed to be a calculated attempt to weaken his expanding political influence and growing public support, particularly among younger voters, as he positions himself for a potential gubernatorial bid in 2027 and possible future roles in national politics.
Babu reiterated his respect for Raila Odinga and emphasized that the focus should remain on mourning and honoring the life of the late opposition icon.
