The 2025 Energy Week kicked off in vibrant style in Kitui County as senior government officials led by Principal Secretaries Alex Wachira (Energy) and Mohammed Liban (Petroleum), alongside Kitui County Deputy Governor H.E. Augustine Kanani, launched the weeklong celebration with a symbolic tree planting exercise at Ithookwe Primary School. The event marked the official beginning of the Mashujaa Day Energy Week 2025, setting the tone for a week dedicated to sustainable energy and environmental stewardship.

This year’s Energy Week is themed “Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Energy Solutions”, and is being hosted at the Kitui Teachers Training College (KTTC) from October 13 to Friday 18th, culminating in the Mashujaa Day National Celebrations on Monday, October 20 at Ithookwe Stadium.
Energy Week 2025 brings together key players in Kenya’s energy sector from the national and county governments, to development partners and private sector actors for a series of exhibitions, project launches, and public sensitization activities focused on clean and renewable energy.

After the tree planting, Petroleum PS Mohammed Liban, CBS, officially commissioned the Kitui Teachers Training College Borehole Project, one of the flagship undertakings of this year’s Energy Week. The project, fully funded by the Kenya Pipeline Company Foundation, involved drilling, equipping, and solarizing the borehole to ensure sustainable access to clean water.

The borehole, drilled to a depth of 205 meters, delivers 10.2 cubic meters of water per hour using a BWSP 8/37 submersible pump powered by a 5.5 kW motor and a 7.5 kW inverter. Remarkably, the entire project was completed in just 17 days from September 26 to October 12 and will benefit over 2,500 students. “This borehole will save the institution millions of shillings that were previously spent on buying water from boozers on daily and monthly basis,” said PS Liban.

“I’m told 75% of students here are ladies and as we all know, females got more needs than men when it comes to water in their daily lives.” he added.
PS Mohammed Liban was joined by the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination Mr. Dennis Itumbi who was accompanied by a team from the creative industry.

In line with the week’s theme, PS Liban also highlighted ongoing clean energy initiatives in the county. He revealed that the Ministry has rolled out over 24,000 LPG gas cylinders of 6kg capacity across Kitui’s 8 constituencies, with 3,000 already distributed to each constituency and an additional 1,000 cylinders set to be launched by President William Ruto during his visit to the county.
Currently, 11 energy projects are underway across Kitui County through a matching fund initiative between the County Government and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC). For every shilling contributed by the county, REREC matches it, enabling wider electrification and energy access.
Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani lauded the collaboration, saying: “These partnerships are unlocking development in our rural areas. With power and clean water, our schools, hospitals, and communities can thrive.”

Energy Week 2025 serves as a prelude to the national Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be held on Monday, October 20, at Ithookwe Stadium. The celebrations will be graced by President Dr. William Ruto, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Kitui Governor H.E. Dr. Julius Malombe, and several Cabinet and Principal Secretaries.
