Prince Alwaleed bi Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has passed away at the age of 36, following two decades in a coma. The news of his death was confirmed on Saturday, July 19, by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, in a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Prince Alwaleed’s tragic story began in 2005 when he suffered a devastating car accident while studying at a military academy in London. A subsequent brain hemorrhage during emergency surgery left him in a coma from which he never recovered. Since then, he remained in a minimally conscious state, sustained on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

Throughout the years, his father remained a pillar of hope and devotion, refusing to withdraw life support and constantly praying for a miracle. Prince Khaled regularly posted emotional updates and Islamic prayers on sacred occasions such as the last ten nights of Ramadan and Eid. Most recently, in June of this year, on the third day of Eid al-Adha, he visited Alwaleed with his other sons and publicly prayed for his recovery.

Despite his prolonged unresponsive state, the family continued to hold onto fleeting signs of movement and brought in medical experts from around the world to re-evaluate his condition. But ultimately, after 20 years of unwavering care, Prince Alwaleed’s condition remained unchanged until his passing.
Known across the Arab world as a symbol of parental faith and resilience, Prince Alwaleed’s story touched many and inspired countless prayers from around the globe. His journey served as a reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of familial love.
Funeral prayers for the prince will be held today, Sunday, July 20, in Riyadh.
