CO Gladys Kivoto Distributes Over 650 Tree Seedlings to Mbengeleni Conservancy Group in Isaa, Mutha Ward

Super Chief Officer for Agriculture & Fisheries and Kitui South incoming MP Hon. Gladys Mami Kivoto has intensified her environmental conservation efforts after distributing over 650 indigenous tree seedlings to the Mbengeleni Conservancy Group in Isaa, Mutha Ward.

The initiative comes at the onset of the April–May rainy season, a critical period for tree planting, and is aimed at promoting reafforestation and restoring degraded land within the area.

The Mbengeleni Conservancy Group, which comprises 100 members, manages a 24-acre piece of land that is currently undergoing rehabilitation through a partnership with Hyraxes Conservancy of Kenya. The group has embarked on an ambitious plan to restore the ecosystem through tree planting and sustainable land management practices.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Hon. Gladys Kivoto reaffirmed her commitment to supporting community-led environmental initiatives, noting that such efforts are key to combating climate change while improving livelihoods.

She further pledged to support the project by facilitating the construction of a water pan within the conservancy to ensure sustainable irrigation of the planted seedlings. “When you plant these trees without proper irrigation and a reliable source of water, it becomes zero work. I will do my level best to ensure a water pan is established here to help collect runoff water for irrigation,” she said. The move is expected to enhance the survival rate of the seedlings and ensure long-term success of the project.

In addition to the conservancy, some of the distributed seedlings will be planted at Isaa Secondary School and Isaa Dispensary extending the impact of the initiative as part of efforts to green public institutions in the area.
