The National Government through the Ministry of Defence and the County Government of Kitui have joined forces in the implementation of the Ksh. 200 million Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital project in Mutitu Sub-county, Kitui East Constituency.

The planned Level 4 hospital, located in Mutitu/Kaliku Ward in Kitui East Constituency, has been named in honour of the late Phillip Nzamba Kitonga, the renowned constitutional lawyer who chaired the Committee of Experts that drafted Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

The establishment of the modern health facility follows a request made by H.E. Dr. Julius Malombe to President William Ruto during last year’s Mashujaa Day Celebrations held in Kitui County. The governor had appealed for the construction and upgrading of the health facility during a meeting attended by the President and county health officials at Kitui Mini State Lodge.

In response, President Ruto pledged Ksh. 200 million towards the construction of the Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital as part of the government’s efforts to improve healthcare services in Kitui County and the larger lower Eastern region.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Malombe lauded President Ruto for honouring his pledge and supporting the construction of the hospital, which is being implemented through the Ministry of Defence in honour of the late Nzamba Kitonga.

The governor noted that the project will significantly improve access to quality healthcare services and is expected to serve more than 80,000 residents from Mutitu/Kaliku, Endau/Malalani, Zombe/Mwitika, Miambani, Mui and Nûû wards, as well as neighbouring areas, while also preserving the legacy of one of Kenya’s most respected constitutional lawyers.

In his address, Principal Secretary for Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru said the government under the leadership of President Ruto remains committed to implementing development projects launched across the country.

Dr. Mariru revealed that the two-storey hospital facility will be completed within a record period of nine months, adding that construction works are expected to be finalized by December this year.

The new 94-bed capacity hospital is set to transform the current health facility into a fully-fledged Level 4 referral hospital with the potential of becoming a teaching and referral institution specializing in the treatment of respiratory and infectious diseases.

Residents and local leaders have welcomed the project, terming it a major milestone in enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Kitui East and reducing the burden of travelling long distances in search of specialized medical services.
