Lower Eastern PSK Secretary Dr. Patrick Muthini Special Message to Pharmacists on World Pharmacists Day 2025

World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually every September 25th to honour the critical role pharmacists play in global health. For 2025, the theme is “Think Health, Think Pharmacist.” This theme underscores how pharmacists are far more than dispensers of medicines they are integral to ensuring safe, accessible, and sustainable healthcare for all.

On this World Pharmacists Day 2025, the Lower Eastern Branch Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, Dr. Patrick Muthini, has shared a special message to all pharmacists. Centered on this year’s global theme “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” Dr. Muthini emphasized that the theme is a powerful reminder that pharmacists are not only custodians of medicines but also vital architects of stronger health systems and improved health outcomes. “Around the world, health systems face immense strain from economic slowdowns and shrinking budgets to growing healthcare demands that overstretch limited resources. Yet, pharmacists remain an underutilized workforce with the potential to bridge critical gaps. They ensure equitable access to medicines, promote safe and rational drug use, and play a central role in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Unfortunately, financial constraints often push governments to assign pharmacy roles to non-professionals. While this may seem cost-effective in the short term, it exposes patients to risks, undermines medicine optimization, and erodes public trust. The long-term social and economic costs far outweigh the perceived savings.

Today, pharmacists’ roles extend well beyond dispensing medicines. They are frontline health providers managing supply chains, administering vaccines, leading health promotion, and offering specialized care in areas such as oncology, HIV, tuberculosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Their contributions not only improve individual patient outcomes but also strengthen entire health systems, accelerate Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Investing in pharmacists is therefore not just about empowering a profession it is about safeguarding public health, ensuring patient safety, and building resilient health systems. A strong and well-supported pharmacy workforce is essential for a sustainable, healthier future.

On this World Pharmacists Day, let us reaffirm that the future of health lies in investing in pharmacists.”
