CAF Fines Kenya Ksh 6.4 Million Over CHAN 2024 Safety Breaches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has handed the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) a hefty KSh 6.4 million fine for safety and security lapses during Sunday’s 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) clash between Kenya and Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In its ruling, CAF said FKF committed multiple breaches of safety regulations on August 10, warning that persistent failure to comply could see Kenya’s national team home matches moved to a neutral venue. The continental body directed FKF to significantly boost security at stadiums by deploying adequate personnel inside and around the perimeter and enforcing road closures on match days.

This latest penalty comes just days after CAF slapped FKF with another fine of Ksh 2.5 million for similar lapses during Kenya’s CHAN 2024 opening match against DR Congo at Kasarani. According to CAF’s Security Officer, the opening fixture on August 4 was marred by serious breaches, including: Restricted Area Violations: Unauthorized individuals gaining access to Public Security Areas (PSAs) zones reserved exclusively for accredited personnel.

Gate 11 Stampede: A dangerous crowd surge saw fans force their way into the stadium without proper security screening among other serious violations noted by the Confederation.

In other disciplinary actions, CAF has slapped the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) with a USD 5,000 (Ksh. 645,750) fine for violating CAF’s Media Regulations after failing to present their head coach at the mandatory Match Day-1 press conference ahead of their fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) also came under sanction for inappropriate conduct by its players during the Morocco Vs Kenya match. CAF imposed a USD 5,000 (Ksh. 645,750) fine, with USD 2,500 (Ksh. 322,875) suspended on condition that no similar incident occurs for the remainder of CHAN 2024.

CAF reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing strict discipline and warned that repeat offences could attract stiffer penalties, including match relocations and higher fines.
